Why fixtures move: transfer windows and a crowded calendar

8 November 2026 · Uncategorized · BolaKini editorial

The fixture list published in June is not the one played in October. These are the usual reasons a match changes date.

Supporters are often surprised when a match scheduled for Saturday is suddenly played on Tuesday. Date changes are not an oddity; they are the direct result of three competitions running at once against a limited number of days in the calendar.

Clashes with cup fixtures

The most common cause is a clash with the Malaysia Cup or the FA Cup. When a club goes deep in a cup, its league fixtures have to move because playing two competitive matches within two days is not possible.

In that situation the table becomes temporarily unbalanced. One side may have played two more matches than its nearest rival, and that week's standings have to be read carefully.

Continental commitments

Clubs that qualify for AFC competitions play midweek fixtures abroad. Long travel reduces recovery time, and the following weekend's league match is often postponed or moved so the squad gets at least three days of rest.

Transfer windows

The transfer window decides when a club may register new players. In Malaysia the main window usually opens before the season starts and a mid-season window opens around the middle of the year. Exact dates are announced by the league each season and vary slightly from year to year.

The effect on the fixture list is indirect, but the effect on squads is not: a club that signs players at the end of the window often needs two or three matches before its shape settles. That is the period when league results drift away from expectations.

Pitch conditions and weather

Heavy rain can make a pitch unsafe. The match is postponed and a new date is set later. In that case both sides get unplanned rest — sometimes an advantage for the team that was already tiring.

How to check the real date

Do not rely on a fixture list downloaded at the start of the season. Check the match centre each week: it syncs with the match database and shows the current date and kick-off time, not the original one.
