What decides Malaysia's places in AFC club competitions
Continental places are not fixed. They depend on league position, cup results and the continental ranking.
Each season a number of Malaysian clubs qualify to represent the country in AFC club competitions. That number is not fixed — it depends on how Malaysian clubs have performed in continental competition over the preceding seasons, and on the competition structure set by the AFC.
The continental ranking decides the number of places
The AFC ranks each member association by the results of its clubs in continental competition. Associations whose clubs go deep in the main tournament earn more ranking points, and that ranking determines how many places its domestic league receives the following season.
The practical effect: one club's continental run benefits the whole league. When a side reaches the knockout rounds, it is not only playing for itself.
The route through the league
The clearest route is the final position in the Super League. Clubs finishing at the top qualify for the main AFC club competition, while the next places lead to the second-tier competition.
The number of places allocated to the league route changes between seasons and depends on AFC decisions. Always check the official league announcement at the start of a season, because the rules can change earlier than expected.
The route through the cup
In some seasons the domestic cup winner also receives a continental place. When that happens, league positions below the last qualifying spot can shift down one, because the cup place comes out of the same quota.
This is why supporters calculate scenarios in the final month of a season: one result in the Malaysia Cup can change who plays continental football next season even when the league table does not move.
Group stage versus play-off
Not every place leads directly to the group stage. Some lead to a play-off round played before the domestic season starts. Clubs taking that route play extra matches in July or August, and that affects how they begin the league campaign.
How to check
