Malaysia Cup and FA Cup: what the difference is

8 November 2026 · Uncategorized · BolaKini editorial

Two domestic cups, two different formats. One is open to everyone, the other starts with a group stage.

Malaysia runs two main cup competitions each season, and they are frequently confused. The format difference is not a small detail: it decides how many matches a club plays and how far a smaller side can travel.

The FA Cup: straight knockout

The Malaysia FA Cup is a knockout competition. Each round is a single match; the losing side goes out immediately. That format creates room for upsets because there is no second leg to correct an unlucky result.

Because every round is one match, a club's run can end inside ninety minutes even after a strong league season. That is what makes this type of cup attractive: squad quality helps, but it is not a guarantee.

The Malaysia Cup: group stage first, then knockout

The Malaysia Cup begins with a group stage before moving to knockout rounds. The format guarantees every side a minimum number of matches, so one early defeat does not immediately end the campaign.

The side effect is a crowded calendar. A club that goes deep in both domestic cups while still competing in the league can play more than forty competitive matches in a season. That is where squad depth starts to decide things.

The practical difference for a reader

When you check the match centre, look at the competition name on each fixture. A cup tie played three days after a league match tends to produce a different performance — clubs rotate, and a "shock" league result is sometimes just a cup priority.

Cup matches award no league points. They affect the table only indirectly, through fatigue, injuries and momentum. That is why the table is unchanged after a cup weekend, even when a club's form is not.

Which one matters more?

Both can lead to continental qualification under certain conditions, depending on AFC rules and league position. For a big club, a cup is a route to a trophy when the title race has gone. For a small club, a cup is the most realistic way to play on a continental stage and to earn extra matchday revenue.
